The Sims & the 1 R of Great Social Content Marketing

I was perusing my Tumblr feed when this little ditty (above) vied for my attention and won.

This eye-catching animated GIF was embedded in a sponsored ad promoting the new Sims4 simulation video game, which was released in September to great fanfare disappointment by the Sims franchise’s long-term fans.

The game has 578 customer reviews on Amazon and a rating of 2.9 out of 5 stars. Over on Gamestop, it has a middle-of-the-road user rating of 5.2 out of 10.

So Team Sims definitely needed to step up their marketing game going into the holiday season to attract new fans to the franchise.

The You Rule Tumblr ad linked to a landing page on TheSims website, which showcased an embedded YouTube video of a nearly 2-minute ad spot:

Reuse, Reuse, Reuse

I absolutely LOVE that Team Sims took an ad spot and divided its vignettes into over a half-dozen GIFs that were on-brand and perfectly suited for Tumblr, where GIFs reign supreme.

It seems so simple, but so few digital marketers think to reuse content in innovative ways. Shocking but true.

A Missed Opportunity

A HUGE miss, however, is the fact that Team Sims did not reuse the ad spot to also create and post video vignettes on Vine. But that may be because they seem to have completely forgotten that they set up an official and verified Vine account back in May, to which they uploaded one post before abandoning it for seven months and counting.
